My final 3 months in Switzerland with ABB – my 3rd quarterly report

Please find linked here my third quarterly report, outlining my period of employment from the 10th of April 2012 to the 30th of June 2012.

During my final quarter with ABB, I have been working in the test field, undertaking the system integration, system testing and ABB internal Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for the Millmerran and Bulli Creek 330kV iPASS substations.

I have also had the opportunity to visit ABB’s IEC 61850 System Verification Centre (SVC) and attend a technical presentation on the SVC.

It should be noted that due to the confidential nature of the work I have undertaken I am not able to include any technical information relating to ABB specific tools and processes.

This quarter concludes my nine month term with ABB Switzerland.

On the 23rd of July I commenced my next nine month placement in Scotland with Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (IEC), a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group

I have really enjoyed the last few months with ABB and have gained some excellent, hands-on experience.

I have spent the majority of my time this quarter working in the test field doing system configuration and testing.  In addition to the Powerlink projects, I have been able to gain exposure to a number of systems being implemented in the Middle East and Europe.  I have spent the last few weeks configuring and testing the Millmerran system and in the coming weeks I will begin the setup of the Bulli Creek system.

There is three more months with ABB, during which time I hope to be able to see both Powerlink projects through from the start of the detailed design phase to the handover to ABB Australia.

I was also very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the Laufenburg substation in the north of Switzerland, which was the first high voltage substation in the world to be equipped with an IEC 61850 system.

It should be noted that due to the confidential nature of the work I have undertaken I am not able to include any technical information relating to ABB specific tools and processes or customer projects.

From a personal point of view, I have had many wonderful weekends travelling and skiing.   I am within a two hour train ride of many fantastic ski areas so I have certainly made the most of it this season!

Three months with ABB in Switzerland – my 1st quarterly report

Please find attached here a publicly distributable copy of my first quarterly E. S. Cornwall Scholarship report outlining my period of employment from the 10th October 2011 to the 10th January 2012.

During my first three months with ABB, I have been involved with the system level detailed design for two of Powerlink’s iPASS IEC 61850 upgrade projects – Millmerran and Bulli Creek.

To date, I have undertaken the IEC 61850 system level engineering and MicroSCADA application engineering for both of these substations.

This experience has provided valuable insight into the tools, processes  and philosophies that ABB employ in IEC 61850 system design.  It should be noted that due to the confidential nature of the work I have undertaken I am not able to include any technical information relating to ABB specific tools and processes.

For my next quarter I will be continuing with ABB (details discussed in my report) – before moving on to work with a utility and consultancy firm.
